The NRA spent $30 million supporting then-candidate Donald Trump’s successful 2016 bid for the presidency and has routinely claimed that no law enforcement agency has requested documents about whether the group was used to funnel Russian money toward the campaign.

But experts tell McClatchy that the Justice Department likely gained secret access to financial documents through the IRS as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling.

Steve Hall, former chief of the CIA’s Russia operations, told McClatchy that he believes NRA board members and officers were likely duped by the Kremlin into unwittingly executing an intelligence operation.

“It’s just so insidious,” Hall said of the NRA-Russia connection. “And it sort of ticks all the boxes: connections to the current administration, major backer of then-candidate Trump, the Russians wanting to get in and manipulate our own political system.”

A spokesperson for Mueller’s office refused to comment on the matter.
