Shortly after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was unceremoniously fired by President Donald Trump on Twitter, White House chief of staff John Kelly reportedly had an enraged outburst at a television screen on the plane with the president.
Trump was en route to California to examine prototypes for the ever-elusive wall he plans to build on the southern border and deliver public remarks. The trip got off to a rough start as the chief of staff had a minor meltdown.
“The resulting news coverage, which focused on disarray and disagreement in the Trump administration, left Kelly yelling at a television screen aboard Air Force One as he took off for California with the president, according to a person with knowledge of the events,” Politico reports.
Two officials told Politico that White House aides at the highest levels knew Tillerson was going to be fired but were unclear on when it would occur. Trump told a handful of associates Monday night that he wanted Tillerson gone before meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
CIA director Mike Pompeo, whose Trumpian ideological leanings and penchant for flattery earned the president’s approval, is expected to replace Tillerson.
